Boardwalk Talk: Mineral City: Minerals, Mines, Miners, & Railroads

November 16, 2017 - 6:00 pm -8:00 pm

Beaches Museum Chapel

The Beaches Museum presents Bob Lowry as he offers the Boardwalk Talk, Mineral City: Minerals, Mines, Miners, & Railroads. This event will take place Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m. in the Beaches Museum Chapel.

During the early 1900’s there was a most unlikely mining operation on the beaches of St. Johns County. This unusual sand mine produced ores such as ilmenite which was used to make munitions and titanium that were critical materials for the US during WWI. The mine would come to be known as Mineral City.

The Boardwalk Talk will trace the geology of the Mineral City beaches, the miners who discovered and produced the ores, the railways that hauled the products, and the ultimate fate of Mineral City.

Boardwalk Talks are free to Museum members with a suggested $5 donation for non-members. For further details, please call 904-241-5657.
