Cummer Beaches Lecture: Dr. Scott Brown “Jan Steen’s Continence of Scipio at the Cummer Museum”

November 1, 2019 - 6:00 pm -8:00 pm

The Beaches Museum Chapel

The Beaches Museum along with the Cummer Beaches Lecture Series presents Dr. Scott Brown for a free lecture “Jan Steen’s Continence of Scipio at the Cummer Museum” hosted at the Beaches Museum Chapel. The great Dutch master, Jan Steen, is known for his wry and ribaldry humorous paintings of tipplers, vagabonds, cuckolds, scallywags, bawds, and strumpets, but his painting of the Roman general Scipio in the Cummer Museum depicts a subject normally associated with the noblest themes of heroism, self-sacrifice, and generosity.  Naturally, this story is a set up for parody.  The Cummer’s painting is one of a series of “serious” historical subjects that Steen made into parodic, comedic explorations of human venality, hypocrisy, and absurdity.  Agamemnon, King David, and Scipio among other dignified gentlemen all get in the neck from Steen, one of the great comic masters and observers of human nature in the history of art.

The program is generously sponsored by Diane DeMell Jacobsen, PhD.

The Cummer Beaches Lecture Series is held in the historic Beaches Museum Chapel. Lectures are free. Lectures start at 6:00 p.m., check in begins and refreshments are served at 5:30 p.m. Seats are first come, first serve. For more information, visit the website at cummermuseum.org/beaches.
