The Beaches Museum along with the Cummer Beaches Lecture Series presents Dr. Scott Brown for a free lecture “From the Burning of Notre-Dame to the Cummer Gardens: Preserving Art in Peril” hosted at the Beaches Museum Chapel. The fire at the cathedral of Notre-Dame in the spring of 2019 riveted the world’s attention. The image of the ancient cathedral’s collapsing spire was broadcast around the world—though the spire in question dated only to the 19th century. Now, France’s architects must start the recovery by first asking how to restore or replace what was lost: Should they rebuild a 19th century addition to a 12th century church? The calamity has started a fascinating debate about the complicated history and artistic character of Notre-Dame. The disaster, like the flood of 2017 in Jacksonville that damaged the Cummer Gardens, compels us to think about how and why to preserve our cultural treasures.

The Cummer Beaches Lecture Series is held in the historic Beaches Museum Chapel.
