Beaches Museum is proud to share our “Recovering and Reclaiming Manhattan Beach” exhibit with The Adele Grage Gallery (716 Ocean Blvd, Atlantic Beach, Florida, 32233) through the month of February, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Learn the story of historic Manhattan Beach, Florida. With no visible site evidence of a once-vibrant coastal retreat, “Recovering Manhattan Beach” uses archival sources, oral histories, and a handful of the only known photographs to piece together its timeline (1900-1940s). The exhibit places the site within the context of Jim Crow segregation while paying special attention to the founding of Manhattan Beach (located at present-day Hanna Park in Jacksonville), the role it played in Jacksonville’s African American community, and the factors that led to its demise.
